Just want to say that personally i think it's a very bad idea.

Is there a reason to sign up in order to even see what the place is about, or what it offers?

No offence, being run just fine - just surprised about the mandatory registration is all.
This is one of the very few places where I've signed up that require mandatory registration, usually I avoid them like the plague... and the reason was actually more of interest in following a "story" so to speak.

To keep the bots out.

If you notice other sites, they may show 1000 members but only 100 of them are real people. All of our members are real. :o

If that were the case, remove your mathematical question from your registration - it's un-necessary...

Methinks you'd quickly learn which is the real reason you've got no bots, forum visibility to un-registered folks definately aint one of them ;)

its pretty easy to tell what we are about from the Portal page

and its True

The Visual verfication and the Math Question are a liitle bit of overkill to keep out un-wanted guest... but i just love security :D

I would consider opening General and welcome topics to the Public

i like the idea of people having to register though... thats just a RIP preference and is standard practice on all of our forums

Honestly, were bots wishing to get into the forums, they would've done so already. You aren't targeted for now

I know for a fact a forum I manage has a few hundred bots registered daily, despite a CAPTCHA and email verification. The newest bots are incredibly powerful and can go through most if not all CAPTCHAs that I know of. Same thing for a math question...

As for the boards, why not display the boards to guests but require registration to post?

lol...

it's true, I've seen quite a few forums that've been invaded by bots despite a CAPTCHA.

I've learned from experience and almost loss of my internet along with equipment that there are some nasty people out there that can really do your forum harm if they can get access to it and by requiring registration and going through all the steps, it's the best thing as far as I'm concerned.

forget the bots.. its the spammers that I have a reg policy on my forum for..

Nothing worse than being offered a great deal on viagra .. or porn.. or any other wonderful irrelevant things they can think of to clog my dev forum with..

I got the S*&T's and locked it down, with peeps needing admin authorization to see more than the portal & a few threads. Amazing how it stopped cold when i did that

In a perfect world.. we'd need not do such things, but the net is far from perfect & there seems to be ALOT of Aholes out there who think its there god given right to spam there wares and or crash servers..
